D C Lally Saw Billy and Martine at a naturist summer party. They were great but doing mainly covers (their Crazy Love and Moondance and Summertime were particularly memorable). So the style of the recordings came as a surprise. Great to have a contemporary take on the Canterbury style, but it's not just that. Mellow and rich. Enjoy, I certainly am. Favorite track: Winter Memories.

woodypatof Great "Canterbury Prog/Jazz" music. Fans of Caravan and Soft Machine should check this out. Highly recommended. Favorite track: O Nature.

Neil Talbott (Aquilegian) Why? It's melodic, experimental, proggy, jazzy; the shape of the music undulates like the hilly landscape it was born in, the vocals perfectly uncurl Thoreau's poems- bedded in gorgeous multifaceted arrangments, the soloing is a joy to listen to, the sound stage is lustrous. It's the Canterbury sound reborn... and it ought to be recognised as a prog/jazz classic. Not to be missed. Favorite track: The Vessel.

Within the Circuit of this Plodding Life Within the circuit of this plodding life There enter moments of an azure hue, Untarnished fair as is the violet Or anemone, when the spring strews them By some meandering rivulet, which make The best philosophy untrue that aims But to console man for his grievances
2.
Winter Memories I have remembered when the winter came, High in my chamber in the frosty nights, When in the still light of the cheerful moon, On every twig and rail, The icy spears were adding to their length Against the arrows of the coming sun, How in the shimmering noon of summer past Some unrecorded beam slanted across The upland pastures where the Johnswort grew, The bee's long smothered hum, on the blue flag Loitering amidst the mead; or busy rill, Which now through all its course stands still and dumb Its own memorial,—purling at its play Along the slopes, and through the meadows next, Until its youthful sound was hushed at last In the staid current of the lowland stream; Or seen the furrows shine, And where the fieldfare followed in the rear, When all the fields around lay bound and hoar Beneath a thick integument of snow. So by God's cheap economy made rich To go upon my winter's task again

The Vessel 10:34
The Vessel Though all the fates should prove unkind, Leave not your native land behind. The ship, becalmed, at length stands still; The steed must rest beneath the hill; But swiftly still our fortunes pace To find us out in every place. The vessel, though her masts be firm, Beneath her copper bears a worm; Around the cape, all across the line, Till fields of ice her course confine; It matters not how smooth the breeze, How shallow or how deep the seas, Whether she bears Manilla twine, Or in her hold Madeira wine, Or China teas, or Spanish hides, In port or quarantine she rides; Far from New England's blustering shore, New England's worm her hulk shall bore, And sink her in the Indian seas, Twine, wine, and hides, and China teas.

O Nature 05:45
O Nature O Nature! I do not aspire To be the highest in thy quire, - To be a meteor in thy sky, Or comet that may range on high; Only a zephyr that may blow Among the reeds by the river low; I want to lay on the land, Please understand, Too long have I remained alone, I stumble in the dark. Quickly respond, Let’s seal this bond, Feeling my finger in the earth, You’re never very far away. Give me thy most privy place For where to run my airy race. In some withdrawn, unpublic mead Let me sigh upon a reed, Or in the woods, with leafy din, Whisper the still evening in. For I would rather be thy child And pupil, in the forest wild, Than be the king of men elsewhere, And most sovereign slave of care; To have one moment of thy dawn, Than share the city's year forlorn. Some still work give me to do, - Only - be it near to you!

Fog 07:27
Fog Dull water spirit--and Protean god Descended cloud fast anchored to the earth That drawest too much air for shallow coasts Thou ocean branch that flowest to the sun Incense of earth, perfumed with flowers - Spirit of lakes and rivers, seas and rills Come to revisit now thy native scenes Night thoughts of earth -dream drapery Dew cloth and fairy napkin Thou wind-blown meadow of the air.

Men Say They Know Many Things Men say they know many things; But lo! they have taken wings, - The arts and sciences, And a thousand appliances; The wind that blows Is all that anybody knows.

about

Having run away from the circus to tour Japan with Caravan's Dave Sinclair, Billie Bottle now burrows in the depths of Devon, England.

Band leader, multi-instrumentalist and pianist for Mike Westbrook's Big Band, Billie blends a hint of Canterbury-scene with jazz and folk, bringing forth their new offering, Unrecorded Beam.

This mini-epic concept album, set to the poetry of American Transcendentalist, Henry David Thoreau, connotes nostalgia and whimsy, whilst pushing the experimental/free-improvisational boundaries; warranting its release with the longstanding avant-garde label, Leo Records.

Produced by Lee Fletcher of Unsung Productions, Unrecorded Beam has been adorned with Fletcher's distinctive approach, creating an enchanting and ethereal soundscape - suitably complimenting Thoreau's evocative landscape.

The Multiple is led by vocalist/violinist Martine Waltier, harmonically supported by the graceful flute of Vivien Goodwin-Darke, the stomping trombone of Angus Menter and the outrageously daring sax of Roz Harding.

Premiering on bass guitar is renowned jazz guitarist, Mike Outram, who can be found plucking his stuff alongside the percussive wonders of Gary Evans. With cameo appearances from legendary chanteuse, Kate Westbrook, organist Kula Shaker's Jay Darlington, and touch guitar specialist, Markus Reuter, Billie Bottle & The Multiple have re-created and re-addressed the concept of a concept album - an odyssey defying all odds!
